Wounded under an awning near Messines
Digital Camera
Image by National Library of Scotland
Wounded soldiers lying on stretchers, lined up along the ground. They are reasonably sheltered, with sandbags behind them and awnings propped up over them. The soldier nearest the camera is being helped by a man in uniform. The man is adjusting the stretcher round his head to make him more comfortable. The other men are mostly hidden from view by the makeshift awning. In the background, a first-aid kit lies next to one of the stretchers.

Dressing stations were set up close to the fighting to treat wounded soldiers. Whilst there, the men were either bandaged-up and sent back to fight or, if their condition was thought serious enough, sent on to a hospital or casualty clearing station for further treatment.

Setting his saw
Digital Camera
Image by National Library of Scotland
The photographer has managed to capture a rather quiet moment in the otherwise busy confines of a sawmill. According to the original caption, this lumberman, possibly a member of the Canadian Forestry Corps, is preparing a saw for use. Engrossed in the task at hand, he appears to be blissfully unaware of the camera.

Numerous sawmills were set up behind the front line to maintain a constant source of timber throughout the war. Wood was a vital resource used by both sides for everything from the building of roads, railways, bridges and trenches to the construction of duckboards, dugouts and shelters.
