Cardinal Bourne is seen here standing on the back of a horse-drawn cart. According to the photograph’s original caption, he is addressing the Dublin Fusiliers Brigade. A uniformed man sits on the bench of the cart, holding the reins. The horse is slightly out of focus due to its proximity to the camera. Visible in the background are two uniformed men, one of whom is sitting on a horse. It is an interesting photograph taken from an unusual angle by the British official war photographer, John Warwick Brooke.

Regular visits to the Western Front were made by religious leaders, heads of state, members of royalty and various dignitaries throughout the war. It was considered an important way of maintaining relations and communications between those countries involved.

Football team in France during World War I. They are standing in three rows and posing for the camera. Two men in uniform stand beside them. The players are wearing their football strips. The ball has been placed in front of the men sitting on the ground and is marked with the letters ‘I.M.S..’ They are standing on a muddy pitch with a wooden building and trees directly behind them.

Soldiers were encouraged to take part in recreational activities. Team sports were considered a good way of boosting morale and strengthening bonds between the men. It was an opportunity for the men to relax and momentarily forget about the war they were fighting in.
